New Swiss Study Reveals the Real Impact of Menopause at Work

The first nationwide study on menopause in the Swiss workplace has just been released — and the results are a wake-up call.

Led by a research team from HWR Berlin, The Women Circle AG, and the Menopause Centre at Inselspital Bern, the MenoSupport Suisse study surveyed over 2,200 women in employment across Switzerland. The findings are clear:

  • 33% of women reported changing, pausing, or reducing work due to menopause
  • 5.7% retired early
  • 13.3% took a career break
  • 16.4% changed jobs
  • 20.5% reduced working hours

Prof. Petra Stute, EMAS President and part of the research team, commented:

“Menopause isn’t a disease. But it can make women sick when they’re left unsupported at work. Medical knowledge doesn’t belong just in clinics — it belongs in leadership rooms too.”

The Swiss data echoes earlier MenoSupport findings from Germany and Austria, confirming that menopausal symptoms can significantly affect women’s health, careers, and retention in the workforce.

This new research arrives at a critical moment. As part of the Menopause in the Workplace campaign, EMAS is hosting a free webinar on September 7 to mark World Menopause and Work Day — and MenoSupport lead researcher Prof. Andrea Rumler will be among the speakers.
